Site of the most northerly lighthouse in New Zealand. In 1878 a lighthouse was situated on Motuopao Island, 5 km south west of Cape Reinga and was known as Cape Maria van Diemen Station. This lighthouse was exposed; sand blown and difficult to provision which eventually led to the relocation to the Cape Reinga site where the present concrete structure was built in 1941.
