Built at Bourdeaux in 1768 La Belle Poule was a fast frigate and one of the first French warships with a copper bottom.
On June 16, 1778 a French squadron, which included the Belle Poule, under the command of Captain Isaac Jean Timothée Chadeau de la Clocheterie, engaged Rear Admiral Augustus Keppel's Channel Fleet, which had been ordered to blockade Brest. The fast British frigate Arethusa (28 guns) caught up with Belle Poule and demanded their surrender. When Chadeau de la Clocheterie refused, Arethusa opened fire; the battle lasted five hours. Arethusa finally withdrew to the safety of the British fleet. The next morning, Belle Poule eluded two other British ships and returned to Brest with 40 dead and 61 wounded.
On July 15, 1780, she was captured by HMS Nonsuch off the Loire and brought into the Royal Navy rated as a 36-gun, 5th-rate frigate.
