The Pourquoi Pas was built at St. Malo, France in 1908.Whimsically named by France's foremost Antarctic explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot, the name Pourquoi Pas? translates simply, "Why not?"

In 1908 Charcot departed on his second expedition to the Antarctic in Pourquoi Pas. On this trip, she sailed between 69°S and 70°S and as far west as 122°W. Among other achievements, the Charcot expedition surveyed 1,250 miles of Antarctic coastline, made extensive hydrographic surveys—including a 225-day study of tides—meteorological studies, bacteriological experiments, and magnetic observations. On January 7, 1910, the expedition also discovered Charcot Land, which Charcot named for his father, an esteemed physician.

15 September 1936 the last year in which the sixty-nine-year-old Charcot would sail, she hit a submerged rock off Bargafjord, north of Reykjavik. There was only one survivor; a seaman named Gonidec, among the forty-two officers and crew.Pourquoi PasPourquoi Pas
