During the Thirty Years War, King Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden commissioned the building of the Wasa.On the 10 August 1628 the Wasa set sail on her maiden voyage.Once she was out to sea, a sudden squall forced the ship onto her side. Attempts to right her were unsuccessful as massive quantities of water were entering through the open gun ports, which were only 1.2 to 1.5 meters above water level.
The Wasa sank in 32 meters of water. In 1959 she was raised and is on display today in Stockholm. It is thanks to the fact that ship worm (teredo navalis) cannot live in the cold waters of the Baltic Sea that the Wasa is the oldest fully preserved vessel today.
